(WLTX) -- Stephon Gilmore, the USC junior cornerback, was taken with the 10th overall pick by the Buffalo Bills Thursday night in round one of the NFL Draft.

He and teammate Melvin Ingram both went in the top 20 picks, and makes the first time two Gamecocks were selected in the first round since 1981. Ingram was selected by the San Diego Chargers with the 18th pick.

Gilmore saw his draft stock rise quickly these last couple of months with impressive performances at the NFL combine at USC's pro day.

This past season, he had 41 tackles and 3 interceptions. He had an interception and returned a blocked point after attempt for a two-point conversion during the Capital One Bowl game.

A nice scenario seemed to be taking place as Carolina had the ninth pick, setting up a short drive for Gilmore from his native Rock Hill.

But the Panthers chose Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly with that selection, allowing the Bills to pounce on Gilmore.
