Batesburg-Leesville, SC (WLTX) - Every week we honor outstanding teachers here in the Midlands with the Golden Apple Award.
This week's winner is Bridget Miles, a first-grade teacher from Batesburg-Leesville Primary School.
Miles always knew she wanted to teach the first grade--so much so that she held out for five years until a position opened up at Batesburg Leesville Primary School.
Miles knows getting to students early is the key to their success.
"Some can't write their name at the start of the school year and some are already reading," says Miles. "I tell them to put themselves in the story, make it fun for you...By the end of the year my goal is to have all the kids ready and enjoy reading."
It's her love and concern for her student's future that prompted one of their parents to contact us. The parent told us about how the child goes to bed every night talking about Miles, and wakes up talking about her in the morning.
"That just takes my breath away," Miles said when she heard about that testimonial. "That means a lot."
So we came in with our basket full of apples, but quickly realized that our award pales in comparison to what her students already give back to her every day.
"I Love each and every one of them with all my heart."
By the way, this isn't the first award for Ms. Miles. She's already been teacher of the year at her school and was a finalist for district teacher of the year.
