Columbia, SC (WLTX)-- From photosynthesis to frog dissecting, Karen McCartha's 7th grade science class at Dutch Fork Middle school gets it all.
"I'm always on the computer and in textbooks trying to find a new way to teach the same old thing. Largely, because I teach it 6 times and I don't want to get bored, but I also realize every student doesn't learn the same way." McCartha said.
After 35 years in the classroom she admits that experience has been her best teacher and that in her opinion teaching is the most important profession in the world.
Even though she makes a living as an educator she knows that this career is a lot more than just a 9AM-5PM.
"I go to sleep thinking about them, they are my extended family. The people that they become in the future started in the classroom; finding their special talents and helping them develop those talents. "McCartha said.
Students Meya and Feya Elmore submitted one of the nomination letters News19 received for Ms. McCartha.
Meya says, "She brought most of all of her students together as a family, not just as a class. "
The award winning Golden Apple has become a tradition at Dutch Fork Middle School. Ms. McCartha taught last year's Golden Apple winner Lauren Still in the 6th grade.
