Columbia (WLTX) - On the 19th of every month News19 likes to remind you of the importance of self breast exams. One Midland's grandmother and musician who has battled and beat cancer twice, is a great example that self breast exams can save your life.
When Peggy Kaufmann's doctor told her 8-years-ago she had cancer her response was simple.
"I said let's get rid of it.", said Kaufmann.
Because tests showed that the cancer was spreading doctors worked quickly to save her. But things took a turn for the worse after a mastectomy and two rounds of chemotherapy.
"I got very ill and spent ten days in I.C.U. and elected not to finish chemo.", said Kaufmann.
However, she wasn't finished living and sadly, cancer wasn't finished with her. In 2008 cancer attacked her other breast, both times she found the lumps through a self breast exam.
Kaufmann said "Both my parents died of cancer, not breast cancer but they both died and I wasn't planning to die.".
She credits her faith and her family for her healing and at 73-years-old, Peggy Kaufmann is full of wisdom for anyone going through the same battle that she's won twice.
