Pomaria, SC (WLTX) - A fire has destroyed a historic church in the Newberry County town of Pomaria.

Sheriff Lee Foster with the Newberry Sheriff's Department told News19 that just before 7:00 Thursday morning, the Saint Paul Lutheran church caught fire.

The church is off Highway 773 and Interstate 26. Few details are available at this point but Foster said that Highway 773 is completely blocked and the fire is affecting traffic in surrounding areas.

Sheriff Foster said a 911 call came in just after 6:30am and that when firefighters arrived a majority of the historic granite church was engulfed in flames.

Foster says that a major firefighting operation is currently underway with crews from both Newberry and Lexington responding.

No word on what sparked the blaze.
