(Columbia) - A body discovered in the Saluda River Friday morning may be that of a man who's been missing since a police chase ended at the river on January 25th.
Columbia police found the body near the same location where 23-year-old Maurice Conyers was last seen after jumping into the river.
On the night of January 25th, Columbia Police Chief Dean Crisp said his officers tried to pull over Maurice Conyers, after the truck he was driving was reported stolen.
"The vehicle tried to elude the officers and we actually got into a limited chase," said Crisp.
Crisp said Conyers crashed the truck near Riverbank's Zoo and fled on foot. He said the chase ended along the banks of the Saluda River.
In the incident report, officers said they spotted Conyers clinging to a rock in the water, crying for help.
Crisp said his officers tried to reach out to Conyers with a long branch, but they eventually lost sight of him in the water.
An autopsy to confirm the identity of the body will take place on Saturday.
