Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Two men who deputies say broke into a convenience store using a sledgehammer have been arrested by Lexington County Sheriff Deputies.
Trent Jerrod Daniels, 25, and Datron Green, 28, have been charged with second-degree burglary and grand larceny, according to Sheriff James Metts.
Arrest warrants allege that on Monday, Daniels and Green broke into the Corner Mart convenience store on Fish Hatchery Road. Metts said Daniels and Green used a sledgehammer to create a hole in the store's brick wall.
The two then placed about 45 cartons of cigarettes and cash near the hole they made in the wall in order to steal the items, according to deputies.
A witness had contacted the Sheriff's department at about 3:13am and reported that a burglary was in progress at the convenience store.
When deputies arrived they found the hole in the store's brick wall and then just waited near the hole.
The two burglars tried to escape from the store through the store's attic, Metts said. Daniels and Green eventually returned to the store, officers say, and deputies arrested them without incident.
Deputies found a sledgehammer in the woods near the store and officers found Green's Chevrolet Tahoe parked in the driveway of an abandoned home, less than a quarter of a mile or about a three-minute walk from the store.
Metts has asked that anyone with information about additional criminal activity involving Daniels or Green to contact the Lexington County Sheriff's department or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
