Santee, SC (WLTX) - Orangeburg County Animal Control says they have seized 53 dogs and two donkeys from a home in Santee.
Orangeburg County Sheriff's deputies have issued 3 arrest warrants against Daphne Lugo, the alleged president of a rescue organization. County Administrator Harold Young says Lugo is expected to turn herself in Thursday.
The Orangeburg Animal Control is over capacity. Officer James Porter Jr. says they seem to be finding themselves in this situation far too often.
"We are not going to sit down and take people mistreating their animals anymore," said Porter.
Animal Control and Orangeburg County Sheriff's deputies, served a search warrant to a home on Five Chop Road Friday.
Officials say there was a strong odor of feces and urine coming from a garage door. After searching in the garage, they say they found multple dead dogs in plastic garbage bags.
According to an incident report, the homeowner--Daphne Lugo--is the president of the coastal Jack Russell terrier rescue. She wasn't home at the time of the search.
Porter says all of the animals that survive will be adopted out.
"We are hopeful they will all make it, this is our main priority no matter what case we are working on."
