Lexington, SC (WLTX) -- The suspect of an assault refused to stop for pursuing Lexington County Deputies, and died following crashing his vehicle.
The Lexington County Sheriff's Department says that early Monday morning 46 year old Ellis Scarborough assaulted a female companion, punching and kicking her in the face at a home located on Clermont Lakes Drive in Lexington.
Scarborough also threatened to kill the woman, deputies say.
The assault was reported to the Lexington County Sheriff's Department, and shortly after the report, Deputies encountered Scarborough driving on Clermont Lakes Drive.
The Deputy, a Lexington County Sheriff patrol shift supervisor, attempted to stop the suspect, but Scarborough refused to stop his vehicle, causing the patrol supervisor to engage in a pursuit of Scarborough's vehicle.
A short time later Scarborough was involved in a single-vehicle collision, which resulted in his death.
Officials with the Highway Patrol report the collision happened on Founders Road near Pelion just before 2 a.m. They say that's when the vehicle Lexington Sheriff's deputies were attempting to stop ran off the left side of the roadway and struck a utility pole.
Reports indicate a seatbelt was not used.
The SC Highway Patrol and the Lexington County Coroner's Office are investigating the wreck.
