West Columbia, SC (WLTX) - West Columbia police say one of their officers shot and killed a suspect Monday night.
The incident took began around at 11:15 p.m.
According to officers, they'd gotten a report that a man had been threatening another person with a handgun in the 1100 block of Sunset Boulevard. Officers tracked the suspect to the 1100 block of Leaphart Street.
Police say when one of their officers approached the suspect, he pulled a gun from his waistband. The officer responded by shooting the suspect.
The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Eliakim Tipan Shabazz, died from his wounds.
As is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings, the State Law Enforcement Division is investigating.
