Columbia, S.C. (WLTX)-- It is back to school season and one of the many topics parents are discussing is bullying.

Paulette Evans runs an anti-bullying seminar in the Midlands and has five tips for parents to consider before the school year starts:

1. Keep lines of communication open. Encourage children to talk to you if they are being bullied at school.

 2. Report any bullying to school administrators/teachers. Encourage children to walk away from a bully and tell an adult.

 3. Bullying is all about control. Take away the power of a bully by ignoring the bully.

4. Bullying can be loud or quiet. Look for cyberbullying or inappropriate messages on your child's computer. Bullying is a form of abuse. Do not be afraid to have the cyberbullying traced and blocked.   Your child may complain about the lack of privacy, but remember you are the parent and your job is to protect your child from abuse.

 5. A successful school year starts with a safe environment at school. Keep your eyes open for any sort of verbal or mental  abuse.

Paulette Evans can be reached at 803-464-7443.
