Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The City of Columbia and Richland County are celebrating Google Day Friday, as part of their campaign to get Google Fiber here in the Capitol City.

It's an internet connection that's one hundred times faster than anything available right now, and you can help bring it here.

"Things are changing so rapidly that we really need to get ahead of the game when it comes to technology," says Mandi Engram, Marketing Director with the Midlands Authority on Sports, Recreation and Tourism.

"Famously hot, significantly fast" is the slogan for the campaign.  "It would really put us on the map in terms of technology and the knowledge economy that we're trying to build here," says Engram.

But, how exactly can a faster internet help you?  Explains Engram, "Everyone in the community would have access to it, but they're really looking for people to experiment with this network."

That means Google is hoping all the tech-geeks out there will figure out new ways to use it and better things to do with the internet, things they haven't even imagined.  Even though the deadline is Friday, you can still submit a YouTube video explaining Columbia's need or submit a nomination online.  You can show your support with your outfit too, by wearing red, green, blue or yellow - Google's signature colors.

It could be just a few years until you're wondering how you survived without Google Fiber, then climbing into your flying car and taking off for your job at the robot factory.

Hey, it could happen.

Google plans to announce the winning cities sometime within the next year.  No word yet on how long the whole system will take to set up if Columbia is chosen.
