SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -- The former mayor and police chief in the Spartanburg County town of Wellford have been arrested and charged with misconduct in office.
The State Law Enforcement Division on Tuesday charged 79-year-old former mayor Sallie Peake of Wellford and 38-year-old James Christopher Guy of Spartanburg.
City records show $60,000 was used to renovate a building into a history museum before Peake left office June 30. Some of the money was from the hospitality tax funds from the sale of prepared food.
The warrant says Peake misused restricted funds to pay for general expenses and used two undocumented workers to renovate the property that the city does not own.
Guy is accused of using restricted funds for general city expenses.
It was not clear if they have lawyers.
