Tyler, TX (CBS News) Five children were killed and five people taken to hospitals after an SUV left the road and rolled over several times on an interstate highway between Tyler and Canton in eastern Texas, authorities told the Tyler Morning Telegraph.
The dead ranged in age from 2 to 13, the newspaper says. Three of the children were pronounced dead at the scene, and the other two died later, authorities said.
Some victims were thrown from the westbound GMC Envoy, authorities added.
The vehicle was apparently going to a water park.
Texas Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Jean Dark told the Morning Telegraph the "horrific scene" was among the worst she had ever seen.
Dark told the paper the SUV rolled several times as it went down an embankment, coming to rest on its roof.
Dark said the Envoy doesn't have enough seats for the 12 people who were in it, adding there were no car seats in the vehicle.
"Car seats for children of these ages are required by law," she pointed out toe the Morning Telegraph.
