West Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Thursday is World Pet Day and it has been around since 1931. It was originally chosen for St. Francis of Assisi because of his love for animals. Churches throughout the world will observe the day this Sunday with a blessing of the animals.

Pet owners are sure to appreciate the day as most will agree that their pets are a part of the family but did you know they are actually good for your health?

According to the CDC pets can lower blood pressure, cholesterol, triglyceride levels and decrease feelings of loneliness. They can also increase opportunities for socialization and exercise.

Most households in the United States have at least one pet. Officials at West Columbia's PETS Inc. say folks come in there for a variety of reasons.

"If they have children," explained Michelle Elkins, a manager at PETS Inc., "they're wanting most of the time a dog or cat to grow up with their kids, play with their children, play ball whatever. I see a lot of older people come in that are lonely for company. And also, very recently, we had a dog that we adopted out they're actually using it as a service dog for their daughter.  Shelter animals really are the best. They need that second chance just like everyone else does."
