NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The State Law Enforcement Division has arrested a former North Charleston police officer and accused him of staging his own shooting earlier this year.

SLED on Tuesday charged 46-year-old Charles Edward Bullard Jr. of Hollywood with misconduct in office and reporting false information to police.

SLED spokesman Thom Berry says Bullard faces up to 13 months in prison and a fine of about $1,000 if he is convicted.

Arrest warrants state that Bullard shot himself in an attempt to commit suicide by firing into his protective vest.

Bullard's wife says her husband is not commenting. His attorney, Andy Savage, says he thinks the case will be handled as a medical issue.

Police Chief Jon Zumalt says he felt he had to fire Bullard and ask SLED to investigate.
