Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Governor Nikki Haley has issued an executive order that calls for around the clock computer monitoring for all cabinet agencies.
Haley updated the public Wednesday on the latest efforts in the massive hacking that compromised over 3.8 million Social Security numbers and nearly 400,000 credit card numbers.
The governor said her executive order calls for all cabinet agencies to work with the Division of State Information Technology (DSIT) to implement 24 hour a day network monitoring. Trained information technology staff will be looking to identify security breaches and if any viruses or malware are being downloaded.
"Criminals don't try to attack these systems 9 to 5," Haley said.
The monitoring will also let DSIT determine what are normal network traffic levels to allow experts to better determine if there's a potential attacker.
The second layer of her initiative is to bring in a computer system referred to as "The Hand." This device, created by security firm Mandiant, will monitor the cabinet agency computers. If it detects that files are being moved improperly, it will shut the computer down.
The Hand is currently being purchased, and will be bought with $160,000 in federal Homeland Security funds. It will cost each agency about $100,000 to comply with the monitoring.
A full report on the hacking is expected soon, Haley said, but she doesn't want to rush the report, saying it needs to be complete before it's released.
So far, Haley said 789,500 people have signed up for credit protection services being offered by Experian. You can sign up any of the ways below:
