Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- The holidays are around the corner and while many of us have plenty to be thankful for, there are some that could use a helping hand.
The Cooperative Ministry is one of those organizations here in the Midlands trying to help individuals and families work their way out of poverty, but they need your help.
According to Yolanda Green, director of the clothing and furniture bank, "I just feel sorry for the families that are waiting, they are really in need and they are really trying their best to get things on their own, but sometimes they just need that extra help."
According to Green, the extra help is pretty simple and it is something that most of us take for granted.
"Every night I pray, every night, that we could get some more beds in, because it really tears me apart that I am on a bed and they're not, I want to help as much as I can," said Green.
The Cooperative Ministry has 70 families waiting for beds, some of those are now making the transition from homelessness to having a place to stay.
According to Green, "You have families that are still just overjoyed their kids will be able to be on a bed and not on the floor.
Green said, "Some of the things we take for granted, the people I see on an every day basis really don't."
Green herself is no stranger to struggling, but now after turning things around, she is hoping to help others do the same.
According to Green, "If it weren't for places like The Cooperative Ministry, I wouldn't be where I am today, so I just encourage everyone, instead of criticizing sometimes, just give a helping hand because you never know they may have to help you up one day as well."
The Cooperative Ministry is in need of beds, but they also need winter jackets, canned food for their emergency pantry, and they also need financial donations for gas to make those furniture pickups.
