Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The Nurturing Center was honored Thursday morning at the State House for being an "Angel."
The Angels were selected by review of financial reports submitted annually to the Secretary of State's Office, as well as by nominations from the public. Related Coverage: SC's 2012 Scrooges & Angels List Released
According to financial reports, The Nurturing Center spent 83 percent of their total revenue toward charity expenses.
Kristina Pickens, Executive Director of the Center, says the mission is to nurture trusting, caring relationships between adults and children by providing comprehensive, family-focused services to prevent and treat child abuse and neglect.
The Nurturing Center is located at 1332 Pickens Street in downtown Columbia. The Center is open to all families but there are a few requirements Kristina says the families must meet.
"The child must be under the age of 5 and the primary caregiver must be present."
Pickens says the goal is to keep families together and break the cycle of violence.
"These families have a lot of life stressors and they have experienced a lot," says Pickens. "It is a cycle, if you didn't have good parenting and resources, then you are not going to be able to do a good job with your own children."
The Non profit organization is primarily funded through Medicaid, contracts and grants and private donations.
