Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- State lawmakers are taking another shot at passing a ban on texting while driving.

The bill cleared a house committee Wednesday afternoon.

Rep. Don Bowen, the bill's sponsor says it would create fines for being caught using and electronic communication device while driving.

It would also increase the penalties when an accident occurs, with the possibility of jail time when it results in serious injury or death.

Bowen says a statewide law would also reduce confusion among laws passed by local governments.

"Technology has gotten ahead of our legal system, and we have a responsibility to make our roads safe for you and everybody else that's out there and to protect our families when we send them out there on the highways," said Bowen, of Anderson County.

Bowen sponsored a similar bill last year. He says increased public interest and more penalties could help it pass this year.
