A former teacher has been arrested after authorities say she had inappropriate relations with a student.

Twenty-nine year old Courtney Clark Kay, of Spartanburg, has been charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor.

Master Deputy Kevin Bobo of the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office stated that investigators with the sheriff's office Special Victims Unit initiated a investigation on January 30, 2013 after a parent suspected that Kay had been having inappropriate conversations with her son on Facebook. Bobo said that as the investigation continued, investigators discovered that Kay, at the time a science teacher at Spartanburg High School's Freshman Academy, had also been involved with inappropriate touching with the student.

According to Bobo, Kay met willingly with investigators Friday, and after several hours she confessed to the allegations. A warrant was obtained and Kay was arrested and transported to the Spartanburg County Detention Center where she will await a bond hearing.

Spartanburg School District 7 Superintendent Russell Booker said that Kay resigned her position as a result of inappropriate communication with a student, a violation of the district's policies. Booker said that the South Carolina Department of Education has also been notified of the incident and will make a determination on whether to have Kay's teacher's license revoked.
