COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina coach Frank Martin says the Gamecocks have made significant strides the past two months despite their struggles in the Southeastern Conference.
The Gamecocks and Martin head to the SEC tournament this week, seeking the program's first win there since 2008. It's also Martin's first time at the league tournament after the past five seasons coaching at Kansas State in the Big 12 Conference.
The Gamecocks (14-17) open play Wednesday against Mississippi State, who they defeated 79-72 a week ago. They doubled their SEC victories to four this season.
Martin understood the difficult job ahead at turning South Carolina into SEC contenders and has gotten frustrated at times when his players didn't do what they were taught in practice. Yet, Martin believes they've taken the early steps to improve.
