Camden, SC (WLTX) - Trainers, horses and the City of Camden have been preparing for Carolina Cup for months.

"Just like with any athlete they have to do a series of training," said Janet Elliot.  "You start off with some slow work and then incorporate some faster work, which is what we call galloping."

Trainer Janet Elliot will enter horse Alajmal in the $50,000 prize race.

"They all have their own character," said Elliot of Alajamal.  "Some are very personable. Some are kind of nasty or kind of grumpy. Alajamal is kind of grumpy."

Not all of the horses at the park this weekend will be participating on the track though.  Some, will be there only to train at the popular event.

"Not everybody is going to do the same thing because not everybody is on the same schedule," said rider Allison Fulmer.

Organizers anticipate some 60,000 guests at the Camden track to watch horses compete in five different races.

"We want people - families primarily - to have a wonderful beautiful day. We don't want anyone to get hurt. We don't want anyone to get into trouble here," said Don Terrell, a member of the Carolina Cup Association Board.  "It continues to be one of the most important races in American steeplechase and equally important in the south. For South Carolina, it's a phenomenal economic impact."
