Chapin, SC (WLTX) - A Chapin High School teacher who stomped on the U.S. flag during a classroom discussion is resigning his positions.
Lexington-Richland School District Five announced the news in a joint release with the teacher, Scott Compton.
"For personal and family reasons, Mr. Scott Compton has decided to resign from his position as an English teacher at Chapin High School, effective at the conclusion of the 2012-13 school year. Both Mr. Compton and the District agree that his resignation is in the best interest of everyone who was directly involved in this matter."
The district superintendent recommended Compton for termination months ago. Compton had asked for the decision to be overturned.
Compton's attorney had said the teacher was not trying to be disrespectful, but was trying to generate discussion by using a powerful symbol.
