Sumter, SC (WLTX) -- One teenager got quite the surprise during the "Month of the Military Child."

"A daughter needs their mother," Maj. Laura Byrd said.

At Sumter Christian school, it seemed like just a regular day. Except with a surprise high school assembly inside the sanctuary.

"I think God gave me a sign because I kept on singing the song, 'I'm Coming Home,'" Freshman DeJsha Tatum said.

And while DeJsha had a song in her heart, her mother who had been overseas in Kuwait had DeJsha's poem in her head.

"I keep hearing those words that she wrote, 'To see her face again, it'll put a smile on my face. To see her face again, I may even shed a tear. But to see her face, just to put my arms around my mom and to hold onto her tight and not let her go,'" Byrd said.

While students listened to airmen from Shaw Airforce Base, Byrd was preparing for a proper homecoming.

"I had no one to greet me at the airport, but this is worth it all, this surprise to her," Byrd said.

"When I saw the door open and I see her, I had to blink once again," DeJsha said.

And now with mother and daughter reunited after eight months, there's more important matters to take care of.

"We're going to have a party at my house," DeJsha said.
