COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina is one of about three dozen states that want to become a testing site for using unmanned drones for domestically.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports (http://bit.ly/11wkkb0) the Federal Aviation Administration plans to conduct tests at six locations to determine how drones operate in different environments.

The FAA says the sites will research how to safely integrate drones into national airspace.

FAA spokesman Les Dorr said the agency cannot reveal the identities of the 50 applicants for testing, or how many applicants each state has.

Drones are being used by police for search- and-rescue missions and to get to locations officers can't.

Some South Carolina lawmakers have filed bills to restrict the use of drones.

Beaufort Sen. Tom Davis worries the drones might be misused.
