Columbia, SC (WLTX)-- It's Flag Day.
Not the kind of holiday that lets you take a day off from work, unless you live in Pennsylvania, but the kind designed to recognize things that are important. In this case its the adoption of the U.S. flag, which happened on this day in 1777.
A Wisconsin school teacher is credited with proposing the idea of Flag Day, as a way to inspire his students. In 1949 President Harry S. Truman signed legislation that made it official. However, each year, the president must issue a proclamation calling for the national observance and that it must be displayed on all federal government buildings.
President Obama did that on June 7 and also proclaimed this week National Flag week.
There is even a National Flag Day Foundation and if you'd like to know me about Flag day, you can go here.
