Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The oldest tree on the University of South Carolina's campus was removed Friday.

The oak tree was severely injured from a lightning strike more than five years ago.

It was removed for safety reasons.

Eventually, oak will be planted in its place.

The rings will be counted to determine the tree's approximate age, and discussions are underway for how the wood will be used. More than 3,700 trees have been added on the campus in past 10 years.
