Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- For the 4th of July weekend many folks hit the highway to get to South Carolina's beaches. But, Columbia had their own sand bar for residents to relax at.

"We were really just prayerful that folks would just come out and that the weather would cooperate," Tezra Haire with the City of Columbia's Park and Recreation.

It's been dreary this entire week in the Capitol city.

And the parks and rec team has been on pins and needles to see if there would be sun and sand.

"It's been a painful week waiting to see exactly how the weather was going to play out, but we moved forward with our plans," Haire said.

Although many folks had umbrellas in hand, the sky cleared up and it looked like the day was saved.

Rebekah Hodgson's family has been waiting for this Capitol City Beach Day.

"We're usually outside all the time so the rain the past few weeks have been rough," Hodgson said.

Her three boys and husband decided they were going to be at Finlay Park rain or shine.

"We were just looking for something free, fun to do in the Columbia area, we have three little boys and we decided to come out and check it out," Hodgson said. "We figure they had water stuff, so we didn't mind getting wet with the rain."

Although weather reports pointed to this event being washed out, Hodgson is thankful that her boys can play today.

"It's nice that it's dependable. Even though it was downpouring it's still here. We came out even though we knew it was raining, so it's fun," Hodgson said.

The event ended with a bang. Fireworks were there to light the night for event attendees.
