Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The man who Columbia Police say shot himself following a chase with one of their officers has died.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts says 21-year-old Donald Ross Rikard early Monday morning at a local hospital.

An incident report states that around 6:30 p.m. Sunday, a suspect robbed a restaurant on Beltline Boulevard and got away.

Around 11 p.m., an officer driving along Garners Ferry Road noticed a vehicle that matched the description from that crime. The officer began pursuing the vehicle, and according to police, the suspect took off at a high rate of speed.

The car then hit another vehicle, and the suspect got out of the car and ran down Pelham Drive. The report states that the suspect went to a fence behind one of the apartments there.

According to Police Spokesperson Jennifer Timmons, after several verbal commands by a CPD officer that the suspect drop his weapon, the suspect shot himself in the head.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating.
