Orangeburg, SC (WLTX) -- In the cool, wet weather freshman at South Carolina State University started their new life as college students on Friday.

Even though the temperatures were in the upper 60s with some heavy rains, that didn't dampen the spirits of the S.C. State Bulldogs.

"It is like, wow, because it came so fast, the summer moved so fast, I am on my own and I have to do for myself," said freshman Ashelie Bulter.

Bulter is one of the over 500 other freshman who moved onto campus on Friday to officially get their college career started.

Bulter said, "It's exciting, it is different, I have never experienced this before."

The freshman students are not the only ones new at this though, so is South Carolina State University president Thomas Elzey.

"To see the young people coming in and the enthusiasm of our young people and their parents, despite the bad weather, everybody is upbeat, positive and we are all excited about the upcoming school year," said Elzey.

Elzey is 11th president of South Carolina State, he spent part of his first freshman moving in day helping the new students.

Elzey said, "We just feel good all around, we think the experience for the incoming students is going to be a great one, both academically as well as their student life and the activities we have planned for them."

Getting students settled in was Elzey's goal on Friday, but he has high expectations in the future for his first freshman class.

"My hope is that their experience is so good that they will come back and graduate, simple as that, we want them to get a great quality education and graduate," said Elzey.

The new students will go through orientation Saturday through Monday, with returning students moving into the dorms on Sunday.

Classes start for all students Tuesday, August 20th.
