Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The University of South Carolina has helped unveil a new engulfing document of the Hindu religion and culture.

Monday, the school hosted the launch of what's known as The Encyclopedia of Hinduism.

The 11-volume work has been 25 years in the making, and includes the contributions of 1,100 scholars from around the world. It's designed to encapsulate the wisdom and culture of Hinduism for English-speaking audiences.

It's the first time that such a book has ever been written on Hinduism.

"We are sharing the timeless and universal truths, insights, and wisdom to all," said Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji, a Hindu spiritual leader who spearheaded the effort to get the encyclopedia made.

During the production of the encyclopedia, USC provided some of the infrastructure and support for the volumes.

USC leaders also announced Monday "CarolIndia," a celebration of India on campus that will take place throughout the upcoming school year.
