Columbia, SC (WLTX) - September is infant mortality awareness month and a commemoration was going on Thursday at Seawells.

Each year, the National Healthy Start Association kicks off a national campaign to focus on infant mortality awareness.

Palmetto Healthy Start, the March of Dimes and Lowcountry Healthy Start honored "Heroes in the Field." These heroes contribute to decreasing the infant mortality rate in our state.

There were five Heroes in the Field Award Recipients this year.

The Heroes in the Field event was an idea launched in 2006.

"There's daily work that we do but we thought about the work that people are doing that's above and beyond the work that they're doing and we've deemed those as our heroes," said Kim Alston. "If we have can individuals that's working diligently outside of what the work requires them to do then we feel that they're doing more... We consider those as heroes working to save those babies."

South Carolina's infant mortality rate is 7.4 per 1,000 births.
