FORT JACKSON, S.C. (AP) - An Army staff sergeant is being awarded the Army Soldier's Medal for his heroism in saving another soldier from an exploding grenade.
Fort Jackson spokesman Pat Jones says Staff Sgt. Gary Moore is to be presented with the medal Wednesday at the post.
The medal is awarded to any person in the armed forces who distinguishes themselves by an act of heroism, but not involving conflict with the enemy.
Moore was an instructor during a 2012 live-grenade training session when a soldier dropped a live grenade.
Moore grabbed the soldier and threw him over a retaining wall. Moore then dropped on top of the soldier as the grenade exploded. Moore's actions saved both their lives.
