Sumter, SC (WLTX)- The John Crosswell Home for Children is among 15 nonprofits vying for the chance to win a $20,000 charitable donation.

"John Crosswell was a businessman in Sumter and when he died he left the bulk of his estate for the orphans of Sumter County," said Jerry Allred, Executive Director of Crosswell Home.

The home has helped more than 700 children since 1935. Crosswell is located on 28 acres in Sumter. Allred says children come and live on their campus for a variety of different reasons.

"We are a home for children who have primarily been removed from the home for abuse or neglect," said Allred.

But sometimes they are there because of a death of a parent, homelessness or chemical dependency issues.

"There is a misconception sometimes that children who are placed in children's homes and foster homes have done something and they haven't," said Allred. "Sometimes it is a family issue much more than a child behavior issue."

An area Young's store nominated Crosswell Home to win the $20,000 prize. You can help them win by Clicking Here to vote.

The online contest is being put on by Young's parent company GPM Investments, LLC.
