Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Hundreds of all ages from throughout the country joined in downtown Columbia on Sunday to attempt the Guinness World record for most bow ties tied simultaneously.

The lighthearted event held a deeper meaning, with a purpose of bringing attention to the USC Dance Marathon, whose proceeds will benefit the Palmetto Health Children's Hospital.

"It's fun, it'll set a record for the world, good image for our community, but it's bringing a lot of people together who are working for the community and particularly for children's hospital," said Palmetto Health Foundation President Samuel Tenenbaum.

The previous record of 417 bow ties tied was set in England in 2012. To break it, attendees had to tie one bow tie on themself or on someone else within five minutes, which officials said is more difficult than it sounds.

"Not only is it getting enough people here, but it's tying those bow ties within the five minutes," said Guinness Adjudicator Michael Empric. "I don't really know what's going to happen, it'll be exciting to see."

In the end, the group crushed the record by tying more than 820 bow ties within the allotted time. Parents of children who beat the odds while in the hospital say the colorful fashion statements now stand as a symbol for tying the community together.

"I'm a firm believer that it takes a village to raise a child, and Columbia being as big as it is, it's amazing that everybody can still pull together and treat you like family and care about your children and want the best for them," said Stacey Vasquez. "It means a lot."

The official dance marathon where donations are accepted will begin at 12 p.m. on March 1st and last until 12 p.m. the next day. To learn more information, visit the group's website.
