With no weekend winner, the Powerball lottery jackpot has risen to an estimated $400 million for the drawing on Wednesday.

The Multi-State Lottery Association, which runs the game, said the jackpot jumped by roughly $70 million after there were no winning tickets sold before Saturday's drawing for a $330 million prize.

The Powerball jackpot has been building since December. A winner of the latest jackpot could take the prize in a single lump-sum payment of $227.8 million, the association said.

If someone hits the jackpot Wednesday, that person would become the first Powerball winner of 2014. The Christmas Day drawing was the most recent to feature a jackpot winner. Also in December was the second-biggest jackpot on record: $648 million.

Powerball is played in 43 states as well as Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The lottery says the odds of winning the big prize are one in 175 million.

The Powerball prizes have grown in size with the increase in ticket prices, to $2 from $1, and with California joining the list of states participating in the national jackpot game through their state lottery.

The biggest single Powerball prize was $590 million, before taxes, won by a woman in Florida in 2013. A jackpot last summer shared by multiple winners was worth $448 million.
