As cars have gotten more airbags, and more complicated bags, in the past couple year there has been an uptick in recalls involving the bags.

The latest came today with the redesigned Volkswagen Beetle. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says VW is recalling 2,471 of its 2012 and 2013 Beetle coupes -- those with leather seats and built from February 2012 through August 2012 (check the driver door jamb for the build date).

NHTSA says that if the right front seat gets wet, the sensor in the seat (the "occupant control module") may not detect the presence of a child restraint on the seat. Note, the recommended location for child seats for kids actually is in the rear.

The sensor is supposed to turn off the airbag if it detects a child seat. If it doesn't and there is a crash, the bag could go off and injure a child in the seat.

VW will replace the module on a schedule still to be set. More information from VW is at 1-800-822-8987.
