Columbia, SC (WLTX) --- With its 1969 ACC championship, the 1969 USC football team is the only squad to win a conference title in football.
Members of that team were rooting hard for the 2010 Gamecocks to win the SEC Championship and end that 41-year absence. Still, the similarities between the two teams are interesting.
Jimmy Mitchell, who played on that 1969 team, says he can tell that this year's team is in fact, a team. Mitchell feels this year's group, unlike those in past years, plays as one unit with the team's goals being put ahead of individual stats or glory.
There is also an interesting note - the 2010 unit will join the 1969 team as the only USC squads to play in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. Back in '69, that game was known as the Peach Bowl. USC lost to West Virginia 14-3.
Carolina will face Florida State on December 31. A victory would be number 10 on the season, equalling the mark set by the 1984 team.
