Lexington County, SC (WLTX) - Amazon.com, the massive online retailer, is building a new facility in Lexington County, a move which will create over 1,000 jobs.
State and local leaders made the announcement Tuesday afternoon.
The announcement came moments after the Lexington County Council voted on a package of incentives to bring the company to the Midlands.
The development will be built on 90 acres of land in the Saxe Gotha Development Park, which is just off Interstate 77. The site would be only a few miles from the Columbia Metropolitan Airport and the UPS distribution site.
The center is expected to create 1,249 jobs. The site will create an additional 225 jobs during the Christmas period.
Construction on the center is expected to begin in January.
An Amazon spokesperson says the company was drawn to the area by the labor force, the location, and the proximity to the marketplace.
The announcement is considered another major coup for the state and the commerce department. Last year, South Carolina lured Boeing to the Lowcountry with an incentives based deal.
