Eutawville, SC (WLTX) -- The City of Eutawville has appointed a new police chief, Wesley Cook, to head the town's law enforcement.

Cook was appointed while the investigation into a shooting involving the former police chief, Richard Combs, continues.

The U.S. Department of Justice is looking into the death of 54-year-old Bernard Bailey, as well as agents with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

Investigators say Combs shot and killed Bailey.

According to the Orangeburg County corner, Bailey was shot three times: once in the shoulder and twice in the chest. Investigators say the shooting happened on May 2 outside the Eutawville Town Hall on Porcher Avenue.

SLED agents continue to investigate the officer-involved shooting, and officials with the Department of Justice says they are reviewing the case as well, with the help of their Civil Rights Division.

The DOJ says these types of investigations can take longer than others, due to their serious nature. Officials with the First Circuit Solicitor's Office in Orangeburg say they are waiting to receive reports from the DOJ and SLED before moving forward.
