Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- Voters are required to register by October 6th to be eligible to vote in the November 6th general election, and the state Election Commission today launched Online Voter Registration.

Joining a dozen other states in the country, the new online voter registration allows residents who have either a South Carolina Driver's License, or a SC DMV issued Identification Card to register to vote online.

Residents can visit scvotes.org, with the reminder to have your state issued license or identification on-hand, and complete the paperless registration. The system online instantly verifies the information entered, and subsequent review is completed by the county voter registration office. After a few days the new voter registration card is sent in the mail.

This new online voter registration system eliminates the multiple hoops South Carolina voters had to jump through, including printing forms, copying bills, and sending everything through the mail.

Residents can continue to register to vote in person at your county's voter registration and election offices, or by using the mail-in form, or by registering at the SC DMV.
