Orangeburg, SC (WLTX) -- There will be no more premieres in Orangeburg for a while, as the big screens went dark Thursday.

After 36 years, the Carmike Camelot 4 Theatre closed its doors, leaving the city with no silver screen.

Now, parents like Patricia Salley are left wondering where her daughters will go for entertainment.

Salley said, "Very disappointing, because you constantly talk about wanting to stay in Orangeburg and you want them to have the ability to enjoy where they live."

Salley has two teen daughters and an 11-year old daughter, she says they were all surprised.

"It was very surprising and when I told my children, they were very sad," said Salley.

However, Gregg Robinson, the Executive Director of the Orangeburg County Economic Development Commission, says the news of the closure was not a surprise.

"It's market driven and these types of events take place," said Robinson.

Even with Orangeburg's only movie theatre closed, Robinson believes this can be an opportunity for the area to attract a newer modern facility.

"The technology has changed you see these big screens behind us and surround sound at home and the entire market and the delivery of the movie going experience has changed and we need to change with it," said Robinson.

Although there are no concrete plans yet for a replacement cinema, Robinson is confident that the silver screen will return soon to the area.

Robinson said, "We will find the right niche for this community."
