Darlington, SC (WLTX) - Friday, thousands came from near and far to get ready for the Bojangles Southern 500.
It's called the track that's too tough to tame... for a reason.
"Anyone could be leading it and then within ten or twenty laps...boom you hit the wall," said Carl Hofacker.
Coming to Darlington raceway has become a tradition for many all around the country.
"We come every year this is our 12th year that we have been coming to Darlington," said Kelly Hofacker.
For the Hofacker's their journey to see the Southern 500 took more than a couple tanks of gas.
"We came from Grand Junction Michigan."
Some would say driving 14 hours every year just to see a race seems a little crazy but for the Hofacker's they say it's a family tradition.
"We just love coming down, we love the people and we love the track down here."
"We are camped out, we have been here since yesterday we will be here until Sunday," said John Berzley.
Berzley's drive to Darlington was a lot easier...he says his short drive from Winnsboro will be all worth it when he sees his favorite drivers on the track.
"The race is great and the entertainment; just everything about the race."
But he says it's an experience that not even the biggest TV can give you.
"It's unbelievable, if no one has come before, they need to come down and experience the true race. "
