Calhoun County, SC (WLTX) - Calhoun County deputies say one of their officers shot a suspect during a domestic dispute call.

Officers say they responded to a home on Pickett Level Road near Elloree early on June 14th after they got a report of fight between family members. Deputies say when they got to the home, the man had a knife in his hands, threatened officers, and then attacked them.

They responded by shooting him in the abdomen.

Calhoun County Sheriff Thomas Summers said his deputy acted in self-defense.

"My deputy responded appropriately to the threat that the suspect presented him with", Summers said in a statement. "His quick thinking and reaction probably saved his life and kept the situation from becoming much worse."

The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Lester Ray Rickenbacker, was taken to the hospital for treatment.

As is protocol for all officer-involved shootings, the State Law Enforcement Division is investigating.
