Sumter, SC (WLTX)- The Sumter County Civic Center will be a happening spot this weekend as hundreds gather to compete in the American Double Dutch League's World Invitational Championship.

"It's very competitive here," said Joy Holman, Head Coach of the Double Dutch Forces.  "We have teams from Japan.  We have teams from New Jersey, New York and South Carolina."

Holman said her Columbia squad, like many other teams in the competition, have jumpers of all ages, sizes and skill levels.

"I like double dutch because it doesn't discriminate," Holman said of the sport.

Cita Wise, a veteran of the Double Dutch Forces, has been jumping more than 25 years.  While the countless trophies with his name on it are nice, the Atlanta teacher said he didn't win those awards on his own.

"It teaches team first and foremost," Wise said.  "You get to depend on another person beside yourself."

"There's no 'I' in double dutch," said Ulysses Williams, co-founder of the American Double Dutch League.  "It's only team.  Double dutch is the purest team sport in the entire world."

Williams said this weekend's event will demonstrate how the art of double dutching will connect people that may otherwise be worlds apart.

"Short, tall, slim, plush, there's a place for everyone in double dutch."
