Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Columbia police have arrested three suspects they say killed a mother of four at a bakery.
Interim Columbia Police Chief Ruben Santiago says 18-year-old Troy Stevenson, 18-year-old Lorenzo Young, and a 16-year-old juvenile are in custody. All three are facing multiple charges, including murder, in the death of 33-year-old Kelly Hunnewell.
Last Monday around 3:30 a.m., Santiago says the suspects broke into the Tommy Circle bakery where Hunnewell worked. Investigators say the juvenile served as a lookout while the other two suspects went inside.
According to Santiago, the suspects intended to rob a club next door. When they realized that business was closed, they saw the opportunity to rob the bakery.
Surveillance images show armed men entering the store. Santiago says the victim tried to stop the men.
"She put up a fight, she stood her ground and said she's not going to take this," Santiago said.
During the crime, however, Santiago says at least two shots were fired, killing the woman. The men then left the store with no money.
Santiago says the store did not have any available money to steal.
Crimestoppers tips called in by people who'd seen the story of the crime in the media helped investigators track the suspects down. They were taken into custody Friday night and Saturday morning.
Santiago says two of the suspects are documented gang members; however, he says his officers do not believe the crime was some kind of initiation.
Santiago again Monday described Hunnewell as a devoted mother who worked the early morning shift so she could spend time with her children: three girls, one boy, all between the ages of 13 and 6.
"This senseless act took their mother away from them, this senseless act made them orphans," Santiago said. "Now these children have to think about what they're going to do without their mother."
