Columbia, SC (WLTX)- A young boy who was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor has significantly improved.

Last October, doctors didn't know if Richard Culliver was going to make it through the holidays. His mother, Stephanie McMillian says it's a miracle that his tumor is almost gone.

"Richard's tumor is tiny," McMillian said. "It's remarkably smaller compared to when he was diagnosed a year ago."

Richard's motor skills have improved since his surgery. The 8-year-old is able to pickup stuffed animals and even use a remote control to play video games.

"I finally feel like I don't have to just think about today," McMillian said. "I can think about tomorrow for the first time in a year."

Doctors said the survival rate for someone like Richard is usually 9-12 months. Although Culliver beat all odds.

The community has shown the family an outpouring of support. Culliver may even head back to the classroom.

McMillian also said she doesn't have to dwell in the past - and can now look forward to a brighter future.

"We have seen the worst and now we're definitely seeing the best," Culliver said.
