Columbia, SC (WLTX) - A Richland County deputy has been suspended without pay after his arrest at a local restaurant.
Paul Allen Derrick, 49, is facing an assault charge after an incident that took place Monday at the Buffalo Wild Wings, located at 4500 Devine Street in Columbia.
Deputies say Derrick was involved in an incident with a woman while at the business. At the time, Derrick was off-duty.
An incident report states that a woman was sitting at the bar and was visibly upset. According to the report, Derrick approached the woman and spoke to her, but the two got into a verbal argument.
The report goes on to say that Derrick went outside, came back in and tried to place the woman in hancuffs. At one point, officers say Derrick slammed the woman into a metal table, causing it to break. Invesigators say other people at the restaurant recorded the incident on their cell phone.
The report says he held the woman until Columbia police arrived.
When officers arrived, they said that Derrick admitted to them that he had been drinking. They also reviewed the cell phone video of the incident.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott and Columbia Interim Police Chief Ruben Santiago are both looking into the case, and will meet with the solicitor's office next week.
Lott says Derrick is a retired Columbia Fire Fighter and has worked for the sheriff's department for 14 years.
