Sumter, SC (WLTX) - Parts of Sumter are dealing with rising power outages Thursday because of the winter storm.
At its peak, Duke/Progress Energy reported almost 20,000 homes and business without power in the county.
Black River Electric Cooperative had roughly 6,000 customers without power. Official said there have been a lot of trees and branches that have fallen, snapping electric lines.
They believed they had a handle on the problem Wednesday night, but by the morning, more problems had arisen, and some of the lines that had earlier been repaired were damaged again.
Right now the utility only has three contract crews out to restore power. However, help is on the way, as crews from North Carolina were set to arrive Thursday to help restore electricity.
